Hail Protection

Question:

We're in Texas and have a 8+X16+ Rion greenhouse which my wife dearly loves. But I wonder if you have any sort of roof protection from hail that we can buy? I don't know how resistant this greenhouse upper panels are to hail damage.

Answer:

We don't have a product that is specifically designed to prevent hail damage. But I would recommend shade cloths to go over the greenhouse. This will add extra protection from hail. You can view our shade cloths at http://www.greenhouses.com/shade-cloth.html

What is UV protection in a greenhouse and how does ot help or hurt the plants?

The "uv" that you're referring to is ultraviolet light. And most glazing on the greenhouses filter out the uv rays. There ARE greenhouses that advertise extra uv protection which contributes to prolonging the life of the greenhouse covering.

There are many discussions on the benefits of uv lights in a greenhouse since plants grown outside are used to full sunlight. The discussions continue but they still haven't reached any conclusions. No one knows exactly why or how the plants change without the uv light & greenhouse plants do just fine in production and growth in spite of the uv protection in the glazing.

Polycarb thickness choices

I am interested in the Juliana Premium Greenhouse and was wondering why a person would want 10mm rather than 4mm polycarbonate?

For the past few years, 6mm polycarbonate was the strongest poly that was incorporated into greenhouses. Now, Juliana in an effort to continue to provide the best products in their field is providing an upgrade to 10mm poly in their "Premium" model. This increase adds even more strength & durability to an already premium greenhouse.

Glass Vs polycarboate

Recent Question and Answer:

Hi, I'm refurbishing an old greenhouse on the property we bought recently. I live in a temperate climate north of San Francisco. I will be using the greenhouse seasonally to jumpstart veggies and things for the garden. I need to replace all the old glass panels and I would like to know what the merits are of using polycarbonate panels versus glass panels. I have priced both - the polycarbonate panels are much more reasonable, however, I am also interested in durability. I don't like to do things twice -- so I'd rather pay more upfront and have it last. On the other hand, I wonder if the polycarbonate may have more benefits (sun protection, insulation, other?).
Any help feedback would be very helpful.
Thanks,
Mary

A twin-wall poly would offer better insulation and diffuse lighting transmission. Glass is much more attractive and offers more light transmission.

:)
